Basic SEO Glossary

Want to learn SEO step by step. Here is the below tips.
Example : Before You prepare a delicious food, We need to know the ingredient, same way should know the glossary of specific food.

I'm here with Basic SEO Glossary.


Adsense - Simply ads by google zone, a advertising program for website publishers to enable text and image advertisements on their sites by google and generate revenue on a per-click basis.

Adwords
- a pay per click (PPC) program of advertising (appears as Sponsored Links) on Google. The ads which appears on Google and its co-operated websites which allows advertisers to receive targetted traffic on a CPC (cost per click) basis.

Alexa - a search engine by Amazon used for measuring website traffic. Visit Alexa

Alt attribute - used for tagging a images with a text, so that search engines can read the image too. For example

Altavista
- a search engine by Overture Services, Inc. Visit Altavista

Amazon
- The largest internet retailing website. Visit Amazon.com

API - Abbreviation for Application Program Interface. An API is a set of routines, protocols and tools for building software applications; it determines how a service is invoked through the application.

Ask - a search engine owned by InterActive Corp. Visit Ask.com

Back Links - Inbound links pointing to a website or a web page. You can find your website back links by commands - site:www.abc.com in Google, sitedomain:www.abc.com in Yahoo, and currently MSN has closed their command by any reason.

You can also use Yahoo! Site Explorer to find your website's back links

Banned - a website blocked by search engines for its listing or indexing in their database due to unethical techniques used by webmasters or website owner.

Blog - A personal space where you can write or review anything like this blog.

Black Hat SEO - An unethical technique or seo process for getting high rankings in search engines. These techniques are against search engines guidelines.

Cloaking
- Generally considered as unethical technique or method by which a specific content is served to both search engines and to users in different way.

Cost Per Click (CPC) - The cost or cost-equivalent paid per click-through to an advertiser's website.

Crawler - a component by search engines which follows your links or web pages for indexing. Also known as a spider or robot.

Directory Submission - A process of submission of a websites in serveral free or paid web directories available on world wide web.

Doorway Pages
- These are the pages created for getting high ranks in search engines results with sending you on the different page with redirection techniques. This is also considered a unethical techniques.

Google - A popular search engine. Visit Google.

Hyperlink - a link on a text.

Inlinks
- A synonym for back links by Yahoo.

Index - a search engine's database where the website information are stored.

Keyword or keyword phrase
- any word used in searching on search engines by user.

Keyword Popularity
- How popular a keyword is ? Can be find out by several keywords popularity tools like Overture, WordTrackers or DigitalPoint keyword Suggestion Tool.

Keyword Research and Analysis - A research or analysis for selection the targeting keywords or phrases for web marketing for any website.

Link Building - A process of building links to increases the link popularity of a particular websites. It including methods like one-way links, link exchanging, 3 way link exchange, directories submissions, articles submissions etc.

Link Exchange - Exchanging of links b/w two relevant or irrelevant websites.

Meta Tags - Helpful Tags which are used for fast indexing of websites including description and keyword tags with several other attributes.

MSN Search - A famous search engine. Visit MSN Search Engine.

Nofollow - An attritube used to prevent a link from passing link authority which appear like - anchor text.

Can also be used in meta tags to prevent search engines to follow the web page.

Off-page Optimization - Keyword Analysis and link development. A optimization which is taken place outside the website including directories submission, press releases and article submissions.

On-page Optimization - All optimization work which is used to done on websites only including meta tags placement, link exchanging, content optimization etc.

PageRank aka PR - A special importance or algorithm given by Google for web pages which is measured by quality back links. You can see PR of your website by Google PageRank Toolbar. Download it.

PPC - Pay Per Click, advertising model by search engines in which advertiser needs to pay on the clicks for its advertisement towards his/her website. It helps increasing traffic for a website.

Reciprocal Linking - link exchanging b/w websites.

Robots.txt - A text file stored in the root directory which restricts robots access to certain web pages or sub directories of a website.

RSS - Real Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary, a XML format for sharing content or information among different websites. For Example - Click Here

Search Engine
- A search engine is a software or a program designed to help find information online by searching a keyword or phrase and retrieving a list of references that match those criteria. Example - Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask, Altavista etc.

Search Engine Optimization - The process of optimizing a web page or a website in order to gain higher positions or rankings in search engine results (SERP's) for various keyword or phrases.

Search Engine Marketing
- The practice to achieve more visibility of a website on net. SEO, PPC and online branding are the major search engine marketing methods or tactics.

Search Engine Submissions - A process of submitted a websites in search engines.

SERP
- Search engine ranking page or search engine results page. A page that give results for a particular search by a search engine.

Site Map - a web page consists of all important link of websites helps the user and search engines to navigate through the website.

Spamming - The trick or a method to make high rankings of a website in search engines with unethical techniques like keyword stuffing, hidden text etc. Considered as an unethical process.

Supplement Pages - Considered as deleted pages which are not exist on the website or having a duplicate information like duplicate content or meta tags placement.

Wikipedia
- Free online collaborative encyclopedia. Visit Wikipedia

White Hat SEO
- Ethical SEO process based on search engine guidelines and all ethical works for getting high organic rankings in search engines. Read more for ethical seo techniques.

XML - stands for Extensible Markup Language. A scripting language that allows the webmasters to define the properties of the web document. SEO used it for fast indexing and rankings on search engines.
